Understanding Your Knee Pain

The knee is a complex joint that endures a lot of stress with every step, jump, or squat. It’s not surprising that knee pain is incredibly common – roughly 25% of adults over 45 have frequent knee pain kneepaincentersofamerica.com. However, every knee problem is a little different. Some common causes of knee pain include:
  • Arthritis: Wear-and-tear (osteoarthritis) of the knee can cause stiffness, swelling, and pain that’s worse with activity or prolonged sitting. It often affects middle-aged and older adults, making movements like squatting or using stairs painful.

  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner’s Knee): This refers to pain around the kneecap, often due to improper tracking of the patella or muscle imbalances. You might feel a dull ache at the front of the knee, especially when sitting for long periods or going downstairs.

  • Meniscus Tears: The menisci are cartilage pads in your knee. They can tear from a twisting injury or gradual degeneration. A torn meniscus can cause catching, locking, or a sharp, localized pain along the joint line of the knee.

  • Ligament Injuries: Injuries like an ACL or MCL tear/sprain (common in sports or falls) can lead to instability and pain. Even after initial healing, these injuries can leave weakness or scar tissue that causes ongoing discomfort if not fully rehabilitated.

No matter the cause, our first priority is to evaluate your knee thoroughly. When you come in, we will discuss your history (did it start gradually or with a specific injury?) and perform tests such as checking your knee’s range of motion, strength, ligament stability, and how your patella moves. We’ll also look at your hip and ankle mechanics – since weakness or stiffness above or below the knee can contribute to knee pain. By taking this holistic approach, Bounceback Physical Therapy ensures we find any hidden contributors to your knee issue. Identifying the correct cause leads to a more effective treatment plan for you.

Our Knee Pain Treatment Approach

We treat a wide variety of knee problems – from post-surgical rehab to chronic aches – using a combination of advanced techniques. Your personalized program will likely include:
  • Manual Therapy: Hands-on treatment can make a big difference in knee pain. We may use techniques to gently mobilize the knee joint (improving how your kneecap glides or how the tibia moves on the femur) and to work on soft tissues. For example, massage or trigger point release on the thigh muscles (quads, hamstrings, IT band) can reduce tension that’s pulling on the knee. If scar tissue or swelling is present, we’ll address that too with specific manual techniques. These therapies relieve pain, improve flexibility, and set the stage for better movement.

  • Strengthening and Corrective Exercise: Guided exercise is at the core of long-term knee pain relief. We’ll create an exercise plan to strengthen the muscles that support your knee – especially the quadriceps (front of thigh), hamstrings (back of thigh), glutes (hips), and calf muscles. Building strength here helps absorb shock and stabilize the knee joint, taking strain off painful areas. We also incorporate exercises to improve your balance and knee alignment. For instance, you may practice controlled squats or step-downs focusing on proper form, or hip strengthening to prevent the knee from caving inward. If you’re recovering from a specific injury or surgery, we’ll include the appropriate rehab exercises to restore your full function. Over time, these exercises will increase your joint stability and confidence in using your knee.

  • Dry Needling: Chronic knee pain often involves not just the joint, but the muscles around it. If you have persistent tightness or trigger points (knots) in your thigh or calf contributing to your pain, dry needling can help release them. By placing a fine needle into a tight muscle band – for example, in the quadriceps – we cause a twitch response that relaxes the muscle and improves blood flow. Many patients find that incorporating dry needling reduces soreness and allows them to move their knee more comfortably, making their exercises and daily movements easier.

Education is also a big part of our knee rehab. We’ll teach you the do’s and don’ts for your condition – like which movements to temporarily avoid while healing, and how to protect your knees during activities (proper footwear, warming up before exercise, etc.). If needed, we’ll discuss bracing or taping options to give your knee extra support in the short term. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge and strength to keep your knees healthy long after you’ve finished therapy.
